Emergency kit
- Household
The British Red Cross preparedness page has a section headed "Build an emergency kit". It says "having a few essential items ready can help your household cope with unexpected disruptions", and links to its guide to preparing one. Ready Scotland's prepare page likewise lists "make an emergency kit", described as "what items to put in an emergency home and car kit".
The Be Ready checklist uses the word in passing, advising a reminder every six months to check expiry dates and "update your kit if your household's needs have changed". Water: bottled water for three days, three litres a person a day for drinking. Food: non-perishable food for three days. Hygiene: hand sanitiser, wet wipes and bathroom products. Light and warmth: a torch with spare batteries, blankets, sleeping bags and warm clothing. Communication: a battery or wind-up FM radio and a charged power bank. Money and documents: cash in coins and notes, cards, copies of identity documents, and important phone numbers and information such as regular medication and doses. Medical: a first aid kit and essential medication.
Be Ready adds a car version for winter: a torch, in-car phone charger, warm clothes and blankets in the boot in case of getting stuck in wintry weather.
In practice
Most of it is already in the house; the task is to know where it is and keep it in date.
