Distribution network operator

  • Warnings and alerts

The Priority Services Register website explains the term in its note on independent operators. Distribution Network Operators, or DNOs, "cover 14 geographical areas in the country". Independent Distribution Network Operators "design, develop, operate and maintain local electricity distribution networks" under a licence granted by Ofgem, are not restricted to a geographical region, and connect to the DNO networks directly or through another independent operator. If you are connected to an independent network you contact that operator to join its Priority Services Register.

The network operator is distinct from the supplier. The PSR site describes "your energy supplier" as "the company you pay your bills to", and says you register for the PSR through your local electricity network operator, which can then share your details with your supplier, gas network and water company. Network operators can be contacted 24 hours a day, every day, for updates during an interruption.

The Be Ready power cuts page says to report a power cut and track updates on your local network operator's website, or to call 105 if you cannot report it online. Under Schedule 1 to the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, a holder of an electricity distribution licence is a Category 2 responder, with duties to co-operate and share information with the Category 1 responders in its area.

In practice

Your network operator runs the wires and takes the power cut report; your supplier is the company you pay.
